Mad Men Style

With summer in full swing, many have abandoned their television sets in exchange for some extra sunlight and playtime outdoors. But starting this Sunday night, people will be flocking back to their flat screens in anticipation of the Season 4 premier of the hit drama Mad Men. Set in the 1960’s, the show follows the lives of the uber competitive, ego-driven and highly stylized men and women of Madison Avenue advertising.

Staying true to it’s decade in which this drama is set, Mad Men’s fashion captures all the glitz and provocative glamour  which encompasses this period in American history. And with Fall 2010’s whisper to re-feminization of classic silhouettes echoed on the runways, consider the series a primer for the upcoming shopping season. Suits tailored to perfection, structured handbags, feminine details, demure cardigans, shape grazing pencil skirts, sheath dresses and Jackie O-style headscarf/sunglass combinations abound. Take a look at our interpretations on these period in fashion and let us know if you’ll be incorporating some of these styles in your Fall 2010 wardrobe.

Shady Happenings

The heat is on and the sun has been unrelenting this summer. Other than taking in plenty of fluids, the best way to guard against the strength of the summer’s rays is to don an equally chic pair of sunglasses. As an admitted sunnies addict myself, I can’t help but fawn over the latest looks and trends of the moment. But before buying, it’s always best to understand your face structure and the best silhouette for you. Below are our tips on the types of frames you’ll want to try and the ones you’ll want to avoid.

Oval Shape

Mostly balanced proportions. chin is slightly narrower than forehead and cheekbones are high. Try These Most frame shapes work with oval faces Square, rectangular and geometric shapes which add angles to soft curves Avoid These Frames that are too large for your features

Oval shaped faces, like that of Beyonce's have largely balanced proportions. The chin is slightly narrower than the forehead and cheekbones are high.

You’ll Look Beyond In: These are the lucky people. Most frame shapes work with oval faces. Square, rectangular and geometric shapes will add angles to soft curves.

You’ll Want to Run Away From: Frames that are too large and overpowering for your features.

Square

Demi Moore's square shaped facial structure is angular with a strong jaw line, broad forehead and a square chin. Length and width are proportional.

Jessica Simpson's square shaped facial structure is angular with a strong jaw line, broad forehead and a square chin. Length and width are proportional.

You’ll Look Beyond In: Oval and round frames, glasses with temples that are center set or that connect at the top of the frame. Butterfly shaped sunnies.

You’ll Want to Run Away From: Anything geometric or square shaped. These frames will only accentuate angles of the face. Low-set temples or color accents on the bottom of the frames that draw emphasis to the chin are also to be avoided.

Round

Full cheeks, rounded chin with few angles. Width and length are in same proportions.

Cameron has full cheeks and a rounded chin with few angles. Her width and length are in same proportions.

You’ll Look Beyond In: Angular and geometric frames that sharpen facial features. Rectangular and horizontal styles make faces appear longer and thinner. Upswept frames that draw attention to top of face. Glasses with temples that connect at the top of the frame add length.

You’ll Want to Run Away From: Round frames that make your face look rounder and large frames that shorten your face.

Heart Shaped

Broad forehead and wide cheek bones that narrow to a small chin.

Jen's heart-shaped face has a broad forehead and wide cheek bones that narrow to a small chin.

You’ll Look Beyond In: Bottom-heavy frames that add width to lower face. Styles with low-set temples to draw attention downward. Narrow, round frames that soften the forehead.

You’ll Want to Run Away From: Top-heavy styles that draw attention upward. Decorative temples that accentuate the broad upper face.
